The Kroeëng Teunom is the Westkust van Atjeh river formed by the confluence of the Geumpang and Tangsé rivers — both of which belong to the groote Westelijke lengtedal of Sumatra — and the last Westkust river to break through the first or Westelijke Barisan coulisse. In the Encyclopaedisch Bureau’s Sumatra survey (1917), the Kroeëng Teunom is the hydrographical link between the binnenland bivaks of the IVde Divisie Maréchaussee at Geumpang and Tangsé and the Westkust kustvlakte.
Course
The Bureau’s Hoofdstuk I describes the Kroeëng Teunom as “welke ontstaat uit de Geumpang en Tangsé rivieren, welker beide dalen weer behoren tot het groote Westelijke lengtedal.” The Kroeëng Teunom is thus the outflow of the groote Westelijke lengtedal through the Westelijke Barisan coulisse — the laatste rivier ter Westkust, die de eerste of Westelijke Barisan coulisse doorbreekt. North of the Kroeëng Teunom’s breakthrough, the Westelijke lengtedal’s outflow is carried by the Atjehrivier to the sea at Oelèë Lheuë.
Significance
The Kroeëng Teunom is, in the Bureau’s Sumatra survey, the last Westkust river to break through the Westelijke Barisan coulisse, and the hydrographical link between the binnenland bivaks of the IVde Divisie Maréchaussee and the Westkust kustvlakte. The Bureau’s emphasis on the Kroeëng Teunom’s doorbreking of the Westelijke Barisan — and on its composition from the Geumpang and Tangsé rivers — frames the Kroeëng Teunom as the geographical foundation of the Dutch colonial state’s central-Atjeh guerrilla plan: the river whose binnenland tributaries (the Geumpang and Tangsé) sustained the IVde Divisie’s bivaks, and whose doorbreking of the Westelijke Barisan defined the strategic choke-point of the planned central-Atjeh guerrilla against a Japanese landing at Kotaradja.
In the staff history’s Atjeh chapter, the Kroeëng Teunom’s binnenland tributaries — the Geumpang and Tangsé — are the site of Lt Onvlee’s safeguarding of the vaandel of the Korps Maréchaussee and of the Poort stelling capitulation of 18 March 18 March 1942.
