Koerier was a Dutch steamship (Hr.Ms.) specially equipped for the Tamiang river expedition of March 1893. It carried four rapid‑fire 3.7 cm cannons and reinforced decks to navigate the most hazardous sections of the river.
Operational Role
On 30 March 1893, Koerier led the flotilla that broke two river blockades, sustaining five Dutch casualties, including Lieutenant ter zee 2c klasse Van Dijk and two marines.
Significance
The ship’s heavy armament and reinforced hull exemplify Dutch adaptations to riverine combat in the Aceh War.
