The Groote Verklaring — the Great Declaration — was the older political declaration in eighteen articles by which the colonial government had required the oeléebalangs of the Atjehnese landschappen to acknowledge the suzerainty of the Dutch government, before the government in 1899 replaced it with the shorter Korte Verklaring in three articles. The replacement was made because the Groote Verklaring was found too detailed and too restrictive for the practical purposes of the post-pacification government.
