The Depèq was the dry wind of the Gajo country in the months April–October, which sometimes rose to storm-force. The depèq is the principal meteorological feature of the Gajo highlands, and the principal obstacle to market-gardening at Takengon and the surrounding country in those months. The Gajos must be able to protect their gardens against the depèq, otherwise the young plants are damaged. The depèq sometimes grows so strong that the praws of fishermen on Laut Tawar must quickly take shelter.
