Onvlee’s designation for transport to Japan and the temporary hand-over of the vaandel (colours) of the Korps Maréchaussee to the Dutch camp commander of his Birma prisoner-of-war camp. The year 1944 is the staff history’s principal narrative instance of the vaandel’s temporary loss and recovery in the Onvlee episode.

The camp commander held the vaandel from 2 March 1944 until its return to Onvlee on 10 May 1945 — a period of more than fourteen months. The staff history does not record any incident during this period of temporary custody, and the vaandel passed undetected through the Japanese searches and unannounced inspections that continued throughout 1944 and into 1945.
