1648 marks the signing of the Treaty of Münster (1648), which concluded the Eighty Years’ War and recognised the independence of the United Provinces (Dutch Republic). The peace enabled the Republic to expand its overseas trade, strengthening the VOC presence in the Sultanate of Aceh.
