Serawak (historically Sarawak) was a coastal region on the north‑west of Borneo that became the personal domain of James Brooke in 1841. The establishment of the Brooke dynasty introduced a British‑aligned polity that contested the influence of the Sultanate of Aceh, which claimed overlordship over parts of western Borneo. The British acquisition of Labuan in 1846 further reinforced Serawak’s strategic position in the region.

Interaction with Aceh

  • The Brooke administration’s anti‑piracy campaigns intersected with Acehnese trade routes, leading to occasional clashes.
  • British naval support from Labuan enabled Serawak to project power toward areas traditionally under Acehnese suzerainty.
