Lembu was a heavily fortified village and embankment line situated behind the Pedir dike, southeast of Peunayong in Great Aceh.
Military Role
During the Second Aceh Expedition, Acehnese forces constructed three interconnected redoutes (benteng) at Lembu, protected by a 5-meter-thick thorn barrier (bamboe-doeri). On 25 December 1873, Colonel G. Wiggers van Kerchem launched a frontal assault against Lembu, during which Adjutant E.C.O. von Bredow breached the thorn barrier to plant the battalion colors, earning the Military William Order.
The position was captured after intense hand-to-hand fighting during the Battles of Lembu on 25 December–26 December 1873.
