Lamongan was a regency in the eastern part of Java that became a focal point of Dutch military activity during the Japanese invasion in 1942. Dutch marines under Overste Roelofsen were ordered to assist the assistant‑resident of Lamongan, dispersing local unrest and conducting reconnaissance westward.
Military Operations
On 4 March 1942 a motorised section of the Marinebataljon arrived in Lamongan, patrolled the area, and executed a detachment to suppress “onrust” (unrest) among the indigenous population. The operation also involved the execution of a “tiental helhamels” (ten local leaders) to restore order.
Significance
Lamongan’s strategic location made it a key point in the Dutch defensive network on Java, influencing the broader campaign against Japanese forces.
