Lam-toeulo is the place in Aceh that was the base of the colonial army’s elephant-transport — the place to which the transport-elephants were transported in 1913 to serve the transport to Tangsé and the still more southerly post Geumpang. In Oost-Indisch Journael by Merac (1947), Lam-toeulo is the book’s marker of the transverse road — the road from Lam-toeulo via Tangsé to Geumpang along which the elephant-transport operated.

The 1913 transport

In 1913 the transport-elephants were transported to Lam-toeulo to serve the transport to Tangsé and the still more southerly post Geumpang. The transport of the transport-elephants to Lam-toeulo in 1913 is the book’s marker of the elephant-transport’s base: the place from which the elephant-transport operated along the transverse road.

The transverse road

It was decided to abolish the elephant-transport in Aceh in connection with the establishment of the lorry-transport along the so-called transverse road from Lam-toeulo via Tangsé to Geumpang. The transverse road — the road from Lam-toeulo via Tangsé to Geumpang — is the book’s marker of the lorry-transport that replaced the elephant-transport.

Significance

Lam-toeulo is significant in Oost-Indisch Journael as the base of the colonial army’s elephant-transport — the place to which the transport-elephants were transported in 1913 and from which the elephant-transport operated along the transverse road to Tangsé and Geumpang. The book’s argument — that the elephant-transport was abolished in connection with the establishment of the lorry-transport along the transverse road — is the book’s marker of the end of the old-time elephant-transport. Lam-toeulo is therefore the book’s marker of the elephant-transport’s base: the place from which the elephant-transport operated until its abolition.
