Kampang is a place on the coast of Atjeh named in the Dutch pamphlet Beschouwingen over Atjeh en onzen oorlog met dat rijk by Een Ooggetuige (1880s) in the course of the author’s discussion of the Atjehnese coast, the pepper trade, and the sea approaches to the Atjehnese interior. The place is named in the damaged text of the pamphlet alongside other coastal places, and is discussed in connection with the pepper country of the Atjehnese coast.
The pamphlet’s reference
The author of the Beschouwingen names Kampang in the context of a discussion of the coastal places of Atjeh at which the pepper trade was carried on, and at which the author held that coastal lights (kustlichten) and better facilities were needed for the safety of world shipping. The place is one of several named in the pamphlet — alongside Panton Laboe and others — as points on the Atjehnese coast whose development was, in the author’s view, central to the settlement of the country and to the development of its trade.
Significance
