Glé Raja — the Raja mountain, the Raja-gebergte — was the steep mountain mass near Indrapoeri whose bare outrunners narrowed the valley of the Atjeh-rivier from the west and marked, in the observation of W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer, the natural boundary between the river’s upper and lower courses, as described in their Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889).
In the topography of the upper valley
From the berg-plateau of 14 August 1879 the bare outrunners of the Glé Raja were seen pressing in from the west, behind Indrapoeri, to constrict the Atjeh valley; to the west of them lay faintly the alluvial plains of Groot-Atjeh and the rocky curved ridge of the Glé Datar. It was equally imposing by contrast of height: the range stood with the 6000-foot Glé Mentelah and the 7500-foot, heavily wooded Glé Agam — to the west of which the eye could only follow, through the forest-filled narrow gap where the Kroeng Djerir ran, between the mountain of that name and the Glé Raja — as one of the giants holding the inner valley.
Strategic significance
In the final strategic chapter of the book the Glé Raja is one of the two “opstaande zijden” of the defensive triangle of Groot-Atjeh’s conquest: the steep Raja-gebergte formed, together with the uninhabited bare hill-ridges east of the XXVI Moekims, the standing side by which the Dutch line of 1879 resisted hostile irruption from the east — while the apex of the triangle at Indrapoeri held the natural citadel of the whole system (see Indrapoeri defensive triangle (1879)). Over the XXII Moekims the mountain spoke with the Goudberg: “Wanneer de donder weerkaatst van den Goudberg naar den Glé Raja” — when the thunder re-echoed from the Goudberg to the Glé Raja — is the image under which Hooijer elsewhere described the storms of the highland war.
