Gayo Lèuëos was/is a isolated mountainous highland region in the interior of Aceh, inhabited primarily by the Gayo ethnic group.
Historical Context and Role
Between February and July 1904, Gayo Lèuëos was the scene of the intense Gayo and Alas Lands Expedition of 1904 commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel G. C. E. van Daalen. Ten to fourteen brigades of the Korps Maréchaussée marched through its high mountain passes, breaking highland guerrilla resistance.
