‘In times of old Sultan Ali held sway in the kingdom of Chamtalira, by which the Achehnese mean the same that is called Sumatra in the writings of Marco Polo and Ibn Batutah.’ Chamtalira is the setting of the Hikayat Eseukanda Ali and the Hikayat Nun Parisi. The holy Abdurra’uf speaks of ‘the Malay language of Sumatra’ using this term. Indra Siluka (in Keureutoe) In the Hikayat Eseukanda Ali: ‘They purchased land from Ahli, king of Keureutoe and built a sumptuous residence which was called Indra Siluka.’ This is where Ali Juhari was established as a sugarcane planter and where he hoisted the cloth of Ra’na Jamin as a flag.
