Bodleian Library in Oxford houses one of the oldest known Malay manuscripts, the Hikayat Seri Rama, dated to 1633. Although the Hikayat Seri Rama predates many other Malay texts, its age is contested by the older Arabic manuscripts preserved in Cambridge.

Significance

The Bodleian manuscript provides a benchmark for dating early Malay literary production, complementing the Arabic‑Malay Burda translations studied by scholars of Aceh.
