Aroe Islands (today the Arú Archipelago) lie off the coast of Atjeh in the eastern part of the Dutch East Indies. In 1893 the Dutch launched a punitive expedition—referred to in the corps’ records as the Tuchtiging der Aroe‑cilanden—to suppress a local uprising that threatened Dutch shipping and the security of the nearby Atjeh coast.
The operation involved a naval squadron of the Dutch Marine Corps and resulted in the destruction of several fortified villages and the imposition of a Dutch‑appointed local administration.
