W. F. Braun was a major of the infantry of the Netherlands Indies Army who, in the Indisch Militair Tijdschrift No. 11 of 1885, published his thoughts on the origin of beri-beri and the means which in his view might be tried against that much-feared disease. Verstege borrowed from the article the striking army figures for that year: at the beginning of 1885 the Indies army had a surplus of about a thousand native soldiers over establishment, but already in November 1885 that surplus had changed into a deficit of twelve hundred natives, an important loss created chiefly by the beri-beri (see Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger).
