Vice‑admiral J. P. Machielsen served as the commander of the Dutch naval forces in the Dutch East Indies during the third Bali expedition of 1849 (page 106). He led a fleet of sixty war‑ and transport ships, carrying 2 700 sailors, and coordinated the amphibious landings at Boeleleng and later at Djagaraga.
Leadership of the 1849 Expedition
Machielsen’s fleet provided the naval firepower and logistical support for General‑Major A. A. V. Michiels. The expedition assembled roughly 5 000 colonial troops and 3 000 local auxiliaries (koelies) (page 106). His command was crucial in securing the coastal approaches and enabling the marine battalion’s operations.

The navy’s role included blockading the island’s coasts, transporting troops, and delivering artillery support during the assaults on fortified positions such as Djagaraga and Kasoemba (pages 106‑107).
