Van Oordt, Captain-h lieutenant ter zee was a Dutch naval officer who commanded the squadron that ascended the Pedir River in the early days of the Atjeh Expedition in January 1874. Under his orders the marines attempted to land on the riverbank, but the river was shallow and the tide receded, forcing the troops to fight a defensive action that resulted in three dead and nine wounded among the marines. After the tide returned the squadron withdrew to Great Atjeh.
Military actions
Van Oordt’s brief riverine operation illustrated the logistical difficulties faced by the Dutch forces in the low‑lying terrain of Aceh. His squadron’s withdrawal on 29 January 1874 marked the end of the first phase of the 1874 campaign, after which the marines were redeployed to guard the mouth of the Atjeh River.
