Van Dijk was a Lieutenant ter zee 2c klasse in the Royal Netherlands Navy who was wounded during the 30 March 1893 assault on the Tamiang river blockades aboard the Koerier (ship). He sustained a light wound alongside two other marines.
Service
His injury is recorded in the Dutch naval yearbook of 1893, reflecting the hazards faced by naval officers in riverine operations.
