Tulleken was a Dutch lieutenant of infantry serving in the garrisons of the western line in Atjeh in 1876, who accompanied First Lieutenant H. Krüll as the second officer of the main body in the night ambush of 8-9 August 1876 in the pass of Gli Taroem.
The Gli Taroem night
Lieutenant Tulleken stood, with Krüll, before the front of the badly trained native soldiers of the ambush force — expressly to keep them from firing before the signal. When the firing of the detached European post in front caused those recruits to turn and fire wildly towards their own companions, it was Krüll and Tulleken who, stooping, placed themselves bodily in front of the new front of the firing men and finally stopped the fire; by that time the detachment had cost the post in front one fusilier killed and two wounded by that friendly fire.
The event is the single appearance of Tulleken in the official record printed by H. F. Meijer in Atjeh van 26 December 1875 tot 4 September 1876 (1883).
