Even more fanatical than her husband; constantly urged him on. Travelled with him through all hardships. After his death continued her wandering life with ever-shrinking following; old and blind, lived as a hunted animal. Eventually captured after betrayal by a chief who could no longer watch her suffering; the betraying chief first obtained from the commanding officer a guarantee that her life would be spared and that she would be treated as befitted a woman of her rank. When the patrol found her she was so weakened by deprivation that resistance was impossible; she nevertheless attempted to give the betrayer a fatal rentjong stab under the pretext of feeling his face to memorise his features.
Significance
Tjoet Nja Din (Tjoct Nja Din, Cut Nyak Dhien) appears in Jongejan’s account as one of the figures shaping the history of Aceh during the period covered by the book.
