Teukoe radja Hoesin was the oeléebalang of Reubéë in the onderafdeeling Padang Tidji of the *Afdeeling Pidië]], a chief whom Broersma singles out for praise as ‘beseffend welke volksbelangen zijn gemoeid met orde en netheid’ — understanding what people’s interests are involved in order and neatness — and as one who keeps his roads in good condition. The roads around Padang Tidji are particularly well maintained.
Landschap and Roads
Broersma notes Teukoe radja Hoesin in passing, in his account of the onderafdeeling Padang Tidji, as an example of the kind of chief who understands that good roads are not a luxury but a volksbelang. The great road runs from Padang Tidji some kilometres westward and then stops; the only large north-south road has a great gap, so that on that stretch in the direction of Seulimeum the Atjeh-tram is the only large traffic-road and over-land connection. There is a path, but it is desirable that the connection over land for heavy transport be completed.
Significance
Teukoe radja Hoesin is one of the small oeléebalangs of Pidië whom Broersma praises, alongside the great chiefs, for taking seriously the ordinary business of wegenbouw — road-building — and orde en netheid. His landschap is the type of the well-kept small chiefdom in the great rice-plain.
