Sultan Jauhar Alain Shah (also styled Alaedin Jauhar al-Alam Shah) was an Achehnese sultan who reigned from 1802 to 1824. His name is one of the eight that appear on the chab sikureu’eng, the ninefold seal placed at the head of sultans’ edicts, and his mediation (afwah) is invoked in the preamble of those documents.
The ninefold seal, as described by C. Snouck Hurgronje, comprises a large central circle containing the name of the reigning sultan, surrounded by eight smaller circles each containing the name of a celebrated predecessor. While the choice of the eight names rests with the reigning sultan, the names of the great sultans of the past and of the immediate predecessors of the reigning king are never omitted; great freedom is otherwise shown in selection. The four names that recur on virtually all such seals are Sultan Sayyidi al-Mukamnal (Alaedin al-Qahhar), Sultan Meukuta Alam (Iskandar Muda), Sultan Tajul-alam (Sapiatodin), and Sultan Ahmat Shah.
Sultan Jauhar Alain Shah appears among the eight namesakes on the seal of the pretender-sultan Sultan Alaedin Muhamad Daud Shah Juhan (elected 1879), and his mediation is explicitly invoked in the preamble of the letters patent (sarakata) which that sultan granted to Panglima Meuseugit Raya on 4 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1307 H (1889). The same preamble invokes the mediation of Meukuta Alam Iskandar Muda, Tajul-alam Sapiatodin, Alaedin Ahmat Shah, Alaedin Mahmut Shah, Alaedin Muhamat Shah, and Alaedin Manso Shah.
Jauhar Alain Shah reigned during the late decadent period of the sultanate, when the effective authority of the port-kings was confined almost entirely to the Dalam (the Sultan’s Court at Banda Acheh) and to a certain lordship over the neighbouring seas and harbours. He was succeeded by Sultan Alaedin Muhamat Shah (1824–1838) and ultimately by Sultan Mansur Shah (1838–1870).
