Sergeant Rijser was a Dutch military engineering (Genie) sergeant who saved the life of 1st Lieutenant Cramer (of the Genie) during the heavy fighting around Garouw (28 June 1874). When Cramer’s revolver misfired as an Acehnese warrior rushed him and the lieutenant was about to be cut down with a klewang after breaking his sword on the attacker’s blade, Rijser seized the raised arm of the Acehnese and killed him with his own weapon after a short struggle.
