R. Jansen van Afferden was a kapitein‑luitenant ter zee who commanded a detachment of Korps Mariniers during the Aroce Islands punitive expedition (1893). His force landed at Kroemoel on 9 January 1893, establishing a beachhead against Acehnese resistance.
