R. D. M. Verbeek was a Dutch geologist and author of Topographische en geologische beschrijving van Sumatra’s Westkust (“Topographical and Geological Description of Sumatra’s West Coast”), published at The Hague in 1883, in royal octavo format with an atlas. The work was offered in 1902 by the bookseller Martinus Nijhoff at 25 florins in commemoration of the third centenary of the Dutch East India Company.
Work
Verbeek’s geological survey of Sumatra’s West Coast was a foundational work in the geology of the island, covering the coastal regions that included the western coast of Atjeh. The work, accompanied by an atlas of maps and geological sections, provided the first systematic geological description of this part of Sumatra, including areas that had only recently been brought under effective Dutch control following the Atjeh War. Verbeek was also known for his geological work on Java (together with Fennema) following the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa.
