Prince of Orange (William III) was the Dutch stadtholder who, in September 1674, directed the siege of Naarden and coordinated the Dutch‑Spanish alliance against French forces (see 276‑277). He ordered Colonel François Palm and Colonel George de Hertoge, Heer van Valkenburgh to capture strategic positions such as the Huizerpoort and later the city of Bonn.
Strategic importance for Aceh
William III’s policies strengthened the Dutch Republic’s naval power, which in turn protected the Indische retourvloot and the Dutch East India Company’s trade routes to Aceh. By securing the home waters, he ensured that the fleet could escort merchant ships to the East Indies without interference from French or English privateers.
