Nöckedved was an officier van gezondheid (medical officer) serving in 1879 as the junior of the two medical officers of the Lamtoba column — a Dane, as the narrative expressly remarks — during the expedition to Lampanas, Lamtoba and Selimoen recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889). The form of the name in the digitised text varies (Nöckedved, Nöckendved); the officer is everywhere the same.
Services of the campaign
On the march from Lampanas to Lamtoba of 28 July 1879 Nöckedved marched with the advance guard, in charge of the ambulance of ten tandoes attached to the main body of the voorhoede under Majoor Coblijn. His principal recorded service of the campaign came on 16 August of that year, in the bivak at Selimoen: when Kapitein Van Rijn marched with one and a half companies and all the available coolies to Ajer-Alang to forage, the column at the same time evacuated four wounded and thirteen heavy sick, and because these could not remain at Ajer-Alang, it was Nöckedved — the officer of health, noted the authors, “een Deen” — who accompanied the transport all the way through to Indrapoeri, returning the same evening to Ajer-Alang. The movement was made through a country that a few days before had been wholly unknown and had always been accounted the heart of the resistance; white flags now stood out everywhere, the population crowded towards the marching column, and the sick of the kampongs were brought for advice and medicine.
