Van Taalman Kip was the Dutch Minister of Marine who, in response to a telegraphic request from the colonial government, ordered the marines to be employed as fully as possible on the war‑front in Aceh. His directive, sent in October 1874, led to the redeployment of a marine company from Fort de Kock to Kota‑Radja where it was incorporated as the 4th company of the Left Half of the 3rd Infantry Battalion.

The minister’s order reflected the high demand for disciplined troops in the ongoing Aceh campaigns and the flexibility of the marine corps in colonial warfare.
