Major Van Heemskerk was a senior officer of the Dutch army who commanded the XIV bataljon infantry during the 1868 assaults on Acehnese fortified villages, notably the attacks on Bandjar and Kali-Anget. His battalion launched two “fruitless” assaults on enemy positions before being reinforced by the marine landing division.
Operations in Aceh (1868)
- First assault: The XIV battalion under Van Heemskerk attempted a direct attack on the enemy’s position at Bandjar but was repulsed.
- Second assault: A repeat attack also failed, prompting the deployment of the marine landing division under Lieutenant P. Spanjaard and Lieutenant D. A. van Vuuren.
Outcome
After the marine forces succeeded, Van Heemskerk’s battalion finally occupied the kraton (royal palace) and the nearby kampong of Kali‑Anget, leading to the surrender of the local leader Ida Madé Rahi.
Significance
Van Heemskerk’s coordination with marine forces illustrates the joint army‑marine operations that were essential to Dutch success in Aceh.
