Lieutenant J. A. van den Velden was a Dutch marine officer who commanded a detachment of thirty‑nine marines from the vessel Melampus during the 1823‑1824 Padri campaign. His men fought at the battle for Marapalm and later took part in the expedition against the sultanates of Tanette and Soepa in June 1824.
Role in the Marapalm Fight
Van den Velden’s marine detachment joined Lieutenant‑Colonel Raaff’s army and suffered one marine killed and three wounded who later died of their injuries. For their bravery, Van den Velden and his men were later awarded the Military William Order 4th class by King Willem I.
Later Honors
In 1828 both Van den Velden and Lieutenant F. A. J. ‘t Hooft received the knight’s cross of the Military William Order; Van den Velden survived, while ‘t Hooft had already died in 1825.
