Led the second Aceh expedition. Military goal: capture the Kraton. Political goal (formulated) included concluding an agreement based on the contract of 21 February 1858 with Siak Sri Indrapoera; otherwise deposing the Sultan and appointing another or providing for the government of the kingdom. 24 January 1874: Kraton conquered. Then began the policy of afwachting (waiting) and toenadering (approach). Mentioned as one of 11 governors of Aceh in 1893.

Lieutenant-General J. van Swieten appears in Jongejan’s account as one of the figures shaping the history of Aceh during the period covered by the book.
