Lieutenant G. C. C. Simmermacher commanded a marine company that led a frontal assault during the advance over the Blang Kala pass on 17 January 1876. He was killed in action during the attack (see page 137).
Action and Death
His company was part of the force that stormed a heavily defended aarden borstwering (earth breastwork) on the mountain slope. The loss of Simmermacher contributed to the overall Dutch casualties of two dead and seven wounded on that day.
Significance
Simmermacher’s death illustrates the high cost of mountain assaults and the vulnerability of Dutch officers in close combat against entrenched Acehnese forces.
