Lieutenant D. A. van Vuuren was a marine lieutenant of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps who served in the Marine Landings Division during the 1868‑1869 campaigns in Acheh. He participated in the assault on Bandjar on 24 October 1868 and later received an Eervolle Vermelding for his conduct.
Aceh Campaigns
Van Vuuren’s detachment was part of the force that attacked the fortified kampong of Kali-Anget, where he helped coordinate the storming of stone‑filled walls. His actions were noted in the official reports, and he was later honored alongside other officers such as Lieutenant P. Spanjaard.
Honors
Awarded the Eervolle Vermelding for bravery during the expedition; later, his name appears among those recommended for the Militaire Willemsorde after the 1870 operations.
Significance
Van Vuuren exemplifies the junior officer cadre that enabled the Dutch marine corps to execute complex amphibious assaults in Aceh’s rugged terrain.
