Lewe van Aduard, Captain ter zee commanded the frigate Van der Werff during the 1821 Dutch expedition against Palembang. When the ship came under heavy enemy fire, van Aduard ordered the mariniers to disembark and seize the enemy batteries, a maneuver that resulted in significant casualties among his crew (page 94).
Naval Command
Van Aduard’s decision to deploy marines from his ship illustrated the integration of naval and infantry forces in Dutch colonial warfare, a practice also employed in earlier actions in the Aceh‑adjacent islands.
