Captains Luimes and Lanzing were the two Dutch company commanders whose companies were the first formed up on the beach west of the Atjeh river during the landing of 8 April 1873 at the opening of the Aceh War. More than five hundred Acehnese charged them from Kota Pantei Tjermin and from behind the dunes in an effort to destroy the landing party before the rest of the force could come ashore; Luimes’s and Lanzing’s companies stood fast, received the charge with rapid fire from their breech-loaders, and then drove the attackers back with bayonet and sabre.
