Kal was a Dutch captain of infantry in Atjeh in 1876, post commander of Lemboeq N.O. in the post chain from Kota Alam to Moesapi, north of the Atjeh River, during the Atjehnese night assault of 23-24 January 1876.

His post of one platoon (2 officers, 60 men) of the 2nd company of the left half of the 9th Infantry Battalion stood, by palm-thatch sheds and a too low palisade and no ditch, closer than any other to the dreaded kampong Pinang. When the Atjehnese storm parties sprang over the west face at about one in the morning, Captain Kal collected 30 to 40 men by the powder magazine at the northwest salient and directed the fight that, after the enemy forced the gate from inside, drove him out again — though only after Lieutenant Regensburge had been struck mortally and 22 soldiers wounded. Two canister shots from the artillery sergeant under his orders sent the enemy definitely on his way.
The conduct of his defence is preserved in the official account printed by H. F. Meijer in Atjeh van 26 December 1875 tot 4 September 1876 (1883).
