K. C. Bunnik was a lieutenant ter zee of class 2c who commanded a column of 173 men, including 24 mariniers, during the decisive assault on Retch on 7 November 1858. His column was equipped with a houwitser and succeeded in surrounding the main fortification.
Action at Retch
Under heavy rain, Bunnik’s column crossed the Batang‑kreek in three sampans, approached to within 150 m of the main entrance, and participated in the breach of the rattan barrier.
