Johan Wøller was a Danish physician who served as an officer of health (officier van gezondheid) in the Netherlands-Indies army and later wrote Als officier van gezondheid naar Nederlandsch-Indië, the source for these Aceh entries.
Arrival in the Indies
In September 1903 he responded to a Danish newspaper advertisement inviting Danish doctors to serve. He married a young nurse and departed. At Colombo the ship received news of the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, “that must therefore have been in February 1904.” A few days later they entered the new harbor of Sabang.
After training in Surabaya, he was posted to Atjeh en Onderhorigheden about 1905 (the introduction notes the Aceh chapter describes conditions “where the writer must have arrived about 1905”).
Service in Aceh
Stationed at Kotta Loempoer, Wøller observed the Aceh War’s final phase, the three categories of officers, and the death of his friend Luitenant ten Brink. His account provides detailed descriptions of the town’s climate, the garrison of 1,200–1,400 men, and the social life of the officers’ club.
