Jan George Wisscher was a lieutenant of the Dutch Marine Corps who served as the adjudant (adjutant) to Jacob Pieter van Braam during the 1784 expedition to the east coast of Sumatra. His duties included overseeing the marine detachment aboard the fleet’s flagship and coordinating landing operations against the forces of the Riouw regent Radya Hadgè.
Service under Van Braam
Wisscher’s appointment as adjutant is recorded in the fleet’s official log of April 1784, when the squadron departed Batavia for the Aceh‑Riau theatre. He was responsible for the discipline and training of the marine troops, many of whom had previously served in the Battle of Doggersbank.
Later Career
After the 1784 campaign, Wisscher continued his service in the Dutch navy, later attaining the rank of captain in the Marine Corps. His experience in combined naval‑land operations contributed to the development of Dutch amphibious tactics in the East Indies.
