J. J. W. E. Versteege was a Dutch writer on colonial affairs and the author of the pamphlet Een beroep op het Nederlandsche volk in zake het Atjeh-vraagstuk (An appeal to the Dutch people in the matter of the Aceh question), one of the polemical publications generated by the public controversy over the Atjeh War in the 1870s and 1880s.
Place in the Atjeh Controversy
Brooshooft listed Versteege’s pamphlet among the secondary sources he consulted when compiling his Brooshooft (1886) of the war, published at Utrecht in 1886. He grouped it with the writings of van Swieten, Verspick, de Rochemont, and “Misopseudes” as part of the rich pamphlet literature to which the prolonged conflict gave rise.
