J. F. C. Hanschen was a matrose of 2nd class in the Korps Mariniers who, during the 1858 assault, climbed the fort’s gate after the rattan barrier had been cut and planted the Dutch tricolour.
Action at Retch
Hanschen’s act of raising the flag symbolised the Dutch capture of the fort. He later served in subsequent campaigns in Sumatra.
