J. De Wind (European cavalryman, pay-list no. 63442) was a Dutch cavalryman of the Netherlands Indies Army in Atjeh in 1876, whose service as mounted orderly during the operation against Lambaroe of 6–7 March was explicitly recorded in the official history of the war.
Lambaroe, 6–7 March 1876
Two mounted orderlies had been detailed to the column commander, Lieutenant-Colonel H. F. Meijer. While the columns attacked the kampong and the enemy fortification at Lambaroe, De Wind carried the orderly service between Lambaroe and Kajoe-Lē: on horseback he made his way — twice — across the sawah and through the enemy fire from Lambaroe and Lamtengah, between the column commander and Major B. E. Mekern at Kajoe-Lē, who held troops ready in the fortification to support the attacker’s march if called. It was he who carried Mekern’s question whether help was needed, and the negative answer back.
His name is preserved, with his pay-list number, by Meijer in Atjeh van 26 December 1875 tot 4 September 1876 (1883), where he is named as one of the men whose service in very difficult and dangerous circumstances might not go unmentioned.
