J. Copius Peereboom was a Lieutenant der mariniers who led a detachment of thirty marines during the Tamiang expedition of February 1893. His force embarked on three steam‑powered boats and fought alongside the infantry column. Peereboom succumbed to exhaustion and sunstroke on 5 May 1893 at Seroeway.
Action
Peereboom’s marines provided covering fire on the right flank of the infantry and helped capture a series of enemy fortifications. His death was noted in the Dutch naval yearbook of 1892‑1893.
Significance
His sacrifice exemplifies the harsh environmental conditions faced by Dutch marines in the tropical interior of Aceh.
