George de Hertoge, Heer van Valkenburgh was a Dutch colonel of the Mariniers who, in September 1674, led two regiments of infantry and two regiments of dragoons to Bonn, forcing its surrender after a brief siege (see 278). His daring assault earned him praise in contemporary Dutch chronicles and a promotion to bevelhebber der stad (city commander).
Connection to Aceh
After his service in the European theater, de Hertoge was appointed to the Dutch East India Company’s overseas forces, where he participated in the defense of Dutch trading posts on Aceh against local resistance during the early 1680s. His experience in siege warfare was considered valuable for the Dutch colonial administration in the East Indies.
