Command of the 1848 Expedition
Van der Wijck’s army was tasked with enforcing a Dutch ultimatum to the Balinese princes after the 1846 campaign. The Dutch navy, under Vice‑admiral J. P. Machielsen, supported the operation with sixty war‑ and transport ships (page 106). Despite initial successes, the expedition suffered a serious defeat at the fortified position of Djagaraga and was forced to withdraw to Java.
Interaction with Local Leaders
The general’s negotiations with Balinese princes failed, leading to renewed hostilities. His inability to secure reinforcements contributed to the Dutch decision to launch a third expedition in 1849 (page 106).
