Photo caption: ‘Generaal G. C. E. van Daalen, Indië’s groote strateeg.’ Led the 163-day Gajo-tocht - a great success. After Van Heutsz became GG, Van Daalen succeeded (after Jhr. Van der Wyck’s brief tenure) as Governor. Under him it was ‘long not pais en vrée’; resistance revived, small army could do little, much criticism. Had ex-Pretendent-Sultan arrested and transported to Batavia (later Ambon). Mentioned by many as India’s greatest strategist; honourably dismissed from his function; succeeded by Colonel H. N. A. Swart. Listed among marechaussée men.
Significance
Generaal G. C. E. van Daalen appears in Jongejan’s account as one of the figures shaping the history of Aceh during the period covered by the book.
