G. P. de Neve was a Kolonel of the Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger who, in July 1873, acted as mentor to the detachment of metropolitan officers sailing to the Indies aboard the steamship Conrad of the Maatschappij “Nederland,” including Tweede-Luitenant C. J. Snijders. During the ten-day enforced stop at Gibraltar for repairs after storm damage in the Bay of Biscay, De Neve conducted the younger officers on an excursion to Tangier.

The Conrad Voyage of July–August 1873

The Conrad (2500 tons) left Nieuwediep on 10 July 10 July 1873 carrying a reinforcement detachment of 400 men, officers returning from European leave, and most of the metropolitan officers being detached to the Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger for the second Aceh expedition — among them Snijders and J. W. N. Cramer. In the Bay of Biscay the Conrad suffered damage and put in at Gibraltar for ten days of repair. The officers profited by their stay to visit the British garrison and, “onder geleide van den, hen als mentor toegevoegden Kolonel van het Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger G. P. DE NEVE,” to make an excursion to Tangier. After Gibraltar the Conrad called only at Port Said and Aden, and reached Batavia on 31 August 31 August 1873 after seven and a half weeks.
