Corporal J. E. Bruins distinguished himself aboard the steamship Vesuvius during an anti‑piracy operation in 1847 (page 108). His actions were recognized later with the Eervolle Vermelding (Honourable Mention) by a royal decree of 21 August 1850 (page 108).

Anti‑piracy Action of 1847

In 1847 the steamship Vesuvius, commanded by Lieutenant‑baron De Constant Rebeeque, engaged local sea‑raiders in the Indonesian archipelago. Bruins’ conduct during the engagement was singled out for bravery (page 108).

Honors

The Eervolle Vermelding awarded to Bruins was recorded in the royal decree of 21 August 1850 (page 108).
